EDITH HEAD’S SIGNATURE STYLE
While she began garnering public attention for her costume designs, Edith Head also became a recognizable celebrity in her own right due to her distinctive style and forthright personality.
Early publicity photoshoots during the 1920s and ’30s at Paramount depict a young Head wearing bold patterns and glamourous silhouettes. She began wearing dark-tinted glasses to help conceptualize costumes for black-and-white film, and she retained the glasses even as color films became the norm. Some believe they helped her to keep her thoughts a secret when working with—and listening to—Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Although she was known to wear bright, vibrant colors and patterns while at home or a party, Head began limiting her wardrobe to black, beige, white, and gray while at the studio. This helped ensure that actresses would not be distracted from their own reflections in the mirror during fittings, explaining “When I’m at the studio, I’m always little Edith in the dark glasses and the beige suit. That’s how I survived.” Paired with her cropped bangs, Edith’s trademark style was born.

Si bien comenzó a atraer la atención del público por sus diseños de vestuario, Edith Head también se convirtió en una celebridad reconocible por derecho propio debido a su estilo distintivo y personalidad franca.
Las primeras sesiones de fotos publicitarias de las décadas de 1920 y 1930 en Paramount mostraban a una Head joven con estampados atrevidos y siluetas glamorosas. Comenzó a usar gafas de color oscuro para ayudar a conceptualizar el vestuario para películas en blanco y negro, y las conservó incluso cuando se popularizaron las películas de color. Algunos creen que las gafas le ayudaron a mantener en secreto sus pensamientos cuando trabajaba y escuchaba a las estrellas más importantes de Hollywood.
Aunque era conocida por usar colores y patrones brillantes y vibrantes en casa o en una fiesta, Head comenzó a limitar su guardarropa a negro, beige, blanco y gris mientras estaba en el estudio.
