The second new movie by Korean maestro Hong Sangsoo to open at OKCMOA this year, Claire’s Camera joins the director’s On the Beach at Night Alone in its semi-biographical depiction of a philandering filmmaker, So Wansoo, and his much younger lover, Manhee (the director’s real-life girlfriend, Kim Minhee). In Claire’s Camera, the tone has become much lighter, as quirky French tourist Claire (Elle‘s Isabelle Huppert) makes her first trip to Cannes, the picturesque French Riverian locale that also happens to host the world’s most prestigious film festival. There, she meets Manhee, who has been fired from her job because of her one-night stand with a famous director. Building on this basic premise, and suffused with a newfound magical realism, Hong, Kim, and Huppert collaborate for a very charming and funny ode to the power of images.
