Today, Yayoi Kusama is the top-selling female artist in the world, famed for her record-breaking Infinity Mirrored Room installations. Kusama’s place in the art world, in other words, has changed enormously over the past few years, following nearly a half century of discouragement, discrimination, and scandal—not to mention the multiple times her art was plagiarized by higher profile male artists, like Claes Oldenburg. Kusama – Infinity takes us through the artist’s amazing life, from her traumatic childhood and adolescence in wartime Japan through her rise to calculating art-world celebrity in the 1960s to her suicide attempts and her ultimate voluntary hospitalization in Tokyo’s Seiwa Hospital for the Mentally Ill. Kusama – Infinity features both archival footage and a wealth of interviews, including Kusama herself, who continues to travel from the Seiwa Hospital to her studio to create new work every day as she approaches age ninety.
