Five-time Academy Award nominee and winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1964 Cannes International Film Festival, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg returns to the world of Jacques Demy’s debut film Lola to weave another gorgeous tale of star-crossed longing. Lensed in the vibrant jewel tones of a Matisse painting and told entirely though the enchanting melodies of Michel Legrand, the film presents an unmistakably French, operetta-inspired twist on the classical Hollywood musical. The story centers on teenage Geneviève (Catherine Deneuve), a cashier in her mother’s umbrella shop, whose dreams of marrying handsome mechanic Guy (Nino Castelnuovo) are upended by financial strain and the looming Algerian War. Effervescent and tragic in equal measure, the sublimely romantic Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most influential and beloved film musicals of all time, and was the principal inspiration for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land.
