In this magisterial adaptation of the Marcel Proust’s multi-volume masterpiece, In Search of Lost Time, we glide through the opulent ballrooms and intimate salons of turn-of-the-century Paris, moving through a world that remains alive only in the dying author’s memory. Directed with uttermost artistry by the great Chilean-born filmmaker Raúl Ruiz, Time Regained skips backward and forward in time, sometimes within the space of a single shot, as we encounter the many lives and loves of the legendary French writer. Catherine Deneuve, John Malkovich, Emmanuelle Beart, and Vincent Perez are among the many high-profile international performers who bring the author’s memorable inner world into existence. Time Regained is an enormous step up in budget and scale for the surrealist-inclined Ruiz, the director of more than one hundred films. It is also one of the best works of his singular career.
