Museum Films has a number of holiday gifts for filmgoers this December, beginning with our exclusive Film Society member screening of one of the greatest Christmas films of all time, Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece Fanny and Alexander. Not a Film Society member? Now you know what to ask Santa for—but be sure he delivers your membership in time for our December 6th screening!
The Christmas theme continues with a Berlin Film Festival prizewinner from Mexico: Museo, starring Gael GarcĂa Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle, Y Tu Mamá TambiĂ©n). Set on Christmas Eve, Museo tells the incredible true story of the largest art heist in Mexican history. Speaking of incredible true stories, Museum Films is also proud to present Chef Flynn a fascinating new documentary portrait of teen culinary prodigy, Flynn McGarry, a budding chef and restaurateur before he was legally allowed to drive.
On the other end of the age spectrum, we will be showcasing Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki, an astonishing behind-the-scenes portrait of the Spirited Away maestro as his unceasing desire to create leads him to start work on his first CGI short. December also brings a 1956 classic that was made to capture “the moment and the mystery of creativity”: Clouzot’s The Mystery of Picasso, with the twentieth century artistic giant drawing on a specially devised semi-transparent surface.
Last, but certainly not least, Museum Films will be presenting its largest-ever holiday film series this December, “Christmas Italian Style.” Featuring no fewer than fourteen of the Italian cinema’s most beloved films, from Bicycle Thieves, Journey to Italy and 8 ½ to Divorce Italian Style, The Tree of Wooden Clogs and I Am Love, “Christmas Italian Style” celebrates nearly seven decades of the very best in Italian film art.
If you’re looking for a not-so-last-minute stocking-stuffer for that film-lover in your life, all-access passes for “Christmas Italian Style” are on sale now. But again, don’t wait until Christmas… “Christmas Italian Style” begins December 20th.
